Apple TV’s acclaimed spy drama Slow Horses has reached a new milestone ahead of the premiere of its sixth season, earning a perfect 100% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and becoming the highest-rated Apple TV series with at least five seasons.
Season 6 of the Gary Oldman-led series begins streaming on Apple TV on September 16. Despite receiving regular Emmy nominations for Best Drama Series and Oldman’s performance, Slow Horses has remained somewhat under the radar compared with other major streaming hits.
That has not stopped the series from building one of the strongest critical records on television.
A rare achievement across six seasons
With its sixth season receiving a 100% critics’ score, Slow Horses now holds an overall 98% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Its audience score currently stands at 88%.
Among Apple TV series with at least five seasons, it ranks ahead of Trying, which has a 97% critics’ score across five seasons. For All Mankind follows with 91%, while The Morning Show sits at 69%.
The achievement becomes even more notable when Slow Horses is compared with television series across all platforms.
The show is tied with Better Call Saul for the highest critics’ score among series that have completed at least six seasons. Both stand at 98%. The Americans follows at 96%, while BoJack Horseman has a 93% score.
Several highly rated shows have achieved even higher scores but have fewer seasons. Dark Winds, for example, has a perfect 100% critics’ rating after four seasons, while Succession stands at 95% across four seasons.
A consistently strong performer
One of the reasons for Slow Horses’ unusual record is its consistency. The series has managed to deliver critically acclaimed seasons year after year, unlike many television dramas that take several years between installments.
Its relatively short seasons, typically consisting of six episodes, have also allowed the production to move quickly and maintain a regular release schedule.
The series follows a group of British intelligence agents assigned to Slough House, a department where MI5 personnel who have fallen out of favor are sent. Oldman stars as the abrasive and unconventional Jackson Lamb, while the show has developed an ensemble cast that includes Jack Lowden.
Jack Lowden linked to the James Bond role
Season 6 is arriving as Slow Horses is also generating attention for one of its leading stars.
Jack Lowden, who plays River Cartwright, has reportedly emerged as a potential candidate for the role of James Bond following Daniel Craig’s departure from the franchise.
There has been no official confirmation that Lowden will become the next 007, but the possibility has attracted considerable attention, particularly given his experience playing an intelligence agent in Slow Horses.
For now, however, Lowden’s immediate assignment is to return to Slough House as the series begins its sixth season.
