Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” alongside host Dakota Johnson, turning up during the actress’ opening monologue to joke about her very public dating history.
Johnson began by describing her friends as supportive and non-judgmental before introducing her “literal therapist.”
Swift then appeared on screen and quickly rejected the title.
“I’m not your therapist, actually,” Swift said, explaining that Johnson instead turns up at her house with an empty bottle of wine, lies down on her couch and overshares about her life. Her contribution, Swift joked, is usually to respond, “Damn, that’s crazy.”
Johnson replied, “Sleepover, yay!”
Swift added that she then gives her Pedialyte before having her security team drive her home.
The exchange followed a series of jokes from Johnson about her relationships with musicians. The actress, who previously hosted “SNL,” said she had experienced “two very public, very lame breakups” with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and musician Role Model.
“Looking for a third,” Johnson joked.
Referring to her upcoming film “Verity,” which she described as a psychosexual erotic thriller, Johnson compared dating musicians to the movie’s subject matter.
“Some of them don’t wear shoes, some of them are terrible in bed, but all of them are in my DMs,” she said.
Johnson later claimed that by dating musicians she was doing a public service by saving women money on antidepressants.
“So you’re welcome, America. And also England. And parts of Ireland. And Cleveland,” she said, prompting an “Allegedly” from Swift.
The Cleveland reference was a nod to Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce, who plays for the Cleveland Browns.
Swift also shouted, “It’s her birthday!” shortly before midnight, when Johnson’s birthday was due to begin.
At the end of the episode, Swift returned during the goodnights carrying a birthday cake for Johnson.
From music video to SNL
The appearance was the latest collaboration between Swift and Johnson. The pair recently appeared together in the music video for “Patient Zero,” which Swift directed and in which she also starred.
The video features Johnson and Colin Farrell as an affluent couple whose marriage appears to be deteriorating, with Swift playing a spectral figure attempting to warn Johnson about her husband’s darker intentions.
Swift’s appearance on “SNL” had been widely anticipated after she took part in an Easter egg-filled “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” sketch during the Emmys. A prominent “Saturday Night Live” logo appeared on a bulletin board behind her in the scene, prompting fans to speculate that another appearance was coming.
Her return to Studio 8H also marked her first on-screen appearance on the programme since October 2023, when she introduced Ice Spice as the musical guest.
Swift first hosted “SNL” in 2009 and has subsequently appeared on the show as a musical guest several times, including in 2017, 2019 and 2021. She also made cameo appearances during a monologue in 2014 and in the “Californians” sketch in 2015.
The latest episode was also notable for its complicated television scheduling. While the show aired live in some markets, including New York and on Peacock, several NBC affiliates delayed the broadcast because a college football game between USC and Washington ran over its scheduled time.
That meant some Swift fans once again had to turn to social media to find out whether the singer had appeared, echoing the previous week’s situation when her appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards was also affected by a sports broadcast delay.
