George R.R. Martin, the creator of the Game of Thrones universe, has revealed that he has been struggling with sadness and depression after experiencing both major career successes and difficult personal circumstances over the past year. The acclaimed author also said he continues to work on the long-awaited novel The Winds of Winter.
In a blog post published on his personal website, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin opened up about the emotional difficulties he has experienced recently. Martin said he had been “struggling with sadness and depression” during an intense year and expressed concern that more difficult days could lie ahead.
The 77-year-old author, who had not posted on his blog since February, described the past year as a period in which both “dreams came true” and “nightmares” unfolded. Without naming them, Martin also referred to the loss of some friends. “I turned 77 last September. I can tell you that growing old is not much fun,” he wrote.
At the same time, Martin emphasized that the year had also brought significant developments in his career. He said he was pleased with the reception of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the HBO series adapted from his work. The show received nine Emmy nominations this year, including a nomination in the prestigious Outstanding Drama Series category.
Martin said whether he would attend the Emmy Awards in September would depend on “a lot of things.”
Still working on The Winds of Winter
Martin said he continues to work on The Winds of Winter, the novel his fans have been waiting for for years, while acknowledging in his blog posts that he has fallen behind.
The author said his future posts might be shorter and written in haste, but promised to continue keeping readers informed about his progress.
Martin has faced the same questions for years over the sixth installment of his long-unfinished A Song of Ice and Fire series. He previously described speculation about his health and the possibility of his death as “disturbing.”
Although he has previously set various target dates for completing the book, none of those deadlines came to pass. Martin nevertheless reiterated that he is still working on The Winds of Winter and once again described it as “a very big book.”
