Norway stretches just 1,750 kilometres from north to south, yet its coastline measures roughly 100,915 kilometres when fjords, islands, islets and skerries are included — enough to circle the Earth’s equator about two and a half times. But the extraordinary figure also illustrates a fundamental problem in geography: a coastline’s length depends on how closely it is measured.
Norway is long enough to cross several climate zones, yet narrow enough that the sea is almost never far away. On a simple map, the country appears as a slender strip of land along Sweden. Closer inspection reveals a dramatically different picture, with its western edge broken into fjords, peninsulas, islands and countless skerries.
That geography creates a striking numerical contrast. Norway extends approximately 1,750 kilometres from north to south, while one established measurement puts its coastline at 100,915 kilometres. Stretched end to end, that distance would circle the Earth’s equator roughly two and a half times.
The figure, however, needs some explanation. It is not an immutable measurement produced by running a tape along a perfectly defined border. The total depends on which parts of the coast are included and how much detail is captured by the mapping process.
In other words, Norway’s coastline is both a spectacular geographical feature and a real-world example of why the length of a coastline partly depends on the ruler used to measure it.
What does the 100,915-kilometre figure include?
The 100,915-kilometre figure appears in a published geographical table based on data from Statistics Norway and the Norwegian Mapping Authority.
The measurement includes Norway’s mainland and islands. A commonly cited breakdown attributes 28,953 kilometres to the mainland coastline, including fjords and bays, and 71,963 kilometres to island shores. The two figures add up to 100,916 kilometres, a one-kilometre difference caused by rounding in the underlying data.
The important point is what is being measured.
The figure does not represent simply the smooth outer edge of Norway visible on a conventional map. The measurement follows bays and fjords, traces both sides of inlets and then continues around islands, islets and skerries.
It is essentially the cumulative length of the places where land meets the sea.
The definition also matters. The measurement refers to what Norwegian statistics define as the mainland geographical unit rather than the entire Kingdom of Norway. According to the Norwegian Mapping Authority, this includes the continental mainland together with islands, islets and skerries inside the baseline, while excluding Svalbard and Jan Mayen.
Islands account for much of the total
Islands explain a large part of Norway’s extraordinary coastline.
Almost three-quarters of the 100,915-kilometre figure comes from island shores. The reason becomes clear when land area and perimeter are considered separately.
A small rocky island may contribute very little to a country’s total land area, but its entire irregular edge adds to the coastline. Multiply that effect across Norway’s huge number of islands, islets and smaller rocky formations, and the coastline expands rapidly.
Fjords add length in another way.
Because a fjord is an inlet of the sea, both of its sides count as coastline even when the water extends deep into the country. Norway has more than 1,000 fjords, many of which branch into smaller fjords, bays and waterways.
Sognefjord, for example, extends approximately 205 kilometres inland. Its shoreline does not replace the country’s Atlantic-facing coast; it effectively adds to it.
That makes Norway’s coastline better understood as a branching network than as a single line marking the country’s outer boundary.
The smaller the ruler, the longer the coastline
This leads to one of geography’s most famous problems: the coastline paradox.
Imagine measuring Norway’s coast using straight lines 100 kilometres long. Each segment would skip over countless small bays, coves and headlands. Using 10-kilometre segments would capture more of those irregularities. A one-kilometre ruler would capture even more.
As the measurement scale becomes smaller, the measured coastline generally becomes longer.
Mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot famously explored this problem in his 1967 paper How Long Is the Coast of Britain? He demonstrated why irregular geographical boundaries cannot always be treated like smooth geometric shapes with a single, fixed perimeter.
This does not mean Norway’s 100,915-kilometre coastline figure is inaccurate. It means the number represents the result of a particular measurement methodology, map and level of resolution.
Two organizations can therefore measure the same coastline carefully and still produce different totals if their datasets capture different levels of geographical detail.
Modern mapping puts Norway’s coastline at more than 102,000 kilometres
The 100,915-kilometre figure remains the established measurement behind the comparison that Norway’s coastline could circle the Earth approximately 2.5 times.
A Norwegian government report also describes the country’s coastline as exceeding 100,000 kilometres when islands, skerries and islets are included.
More recent Norwegian sources, however, often put the total at approximately 102,936 to 102,937 kilometres.
The Institute of Marine Research, for example, estimates the mainland coastline at around 24,000 kilometres when the fjords are followed, rising to almost 102,937 kilometres when islands are included.
Norway has obviously not gained roughly 2,000 kilometres of coastline through geological expansion. The difference largely reflects newer, more detailed geographical data and changes in measurement methodology.
The older figure remains a valid answer to a specific calculation, while the newer figure reflects a more detailed approach to mapping the country’s coastline.
A coastline that shaped the country
Norway’s extraordinary geography is more than a cartographic curiosity. The country’s relationship with the sea has influenced its settlements, transport networks, industries and way of life for centuries.
Fishing communities developed around access to rich coastal waters, while harbours found natural protection within the country’s many sheltered inlets. Ferries and coastal vessels became vital connections between communities separated by steep mountains and deep waterways.
The same geography also creates significant logistical challenges.
Road connections often require tunnels, bridges and ferry crossings to link communities that appear close together on a conventional map. Emergency services, maritime rescue operations, weather forecasting and environmental management must cover an enormous and highly fragmented coastline.
The geography that produces Norway’s spectacular scenery also creates practical demands for the country’s infrastructure and public services.
Ultimately, the 100,915-kilometre figure captures something fundamental about Norway’s geography. It does not mean the country is secretly enormous. Rather, it demonstrates that area and perimeter are very different measures of size.
From a distance, Norway’s coastline looks like a relatively narrow line. Zoom in, and that line opens into fjords, islands, coves and countless smaller edges.
Norway remains roughly 1,750 kilometres long from north to south.
But the closer you look at its coastline, the longer the country becomes.
