A new era for the 100 metres as the final sprint barrier falls

All nine finalists in the latest Diamond League race ran under 10 seconds, marking an unprecedented moment in the history of the event. At the Paris 2024 Olympic final, widely regarded as the most competitive 100-metre race ever, only eight athletes managed to break the barrier.

For decades, running the 100 metres in under 10 seconds has represented one of the defining benchmarks of sprinting excellence. The barrier was first broken by American sprinter Jim Hines at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, when he clocked 9.95 seconds with electronic timing. At the time, such a performance had been considered almost beyond human reach.

Hines won the race comfortably, while Madagascar’s Jean-Louis Ravelomanantsoa finished eighth in 10.25 seconds. It took another 15 years for Carl Lewis to lower the world-leading mark at sea level, running 9.97 seconds and establishing what statisticians consider the first modern benchmark.

Now, however, the 10-second barrier appears to be losing some of its exceptional status.

At Sunday’s Diamond League meeting in Poland, all nine finalists finished below 10 seconds under normal wind conditions. Jamaica’s Oblique Seville won in 9.83 seconds, while Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme was ninth in 9.99. The nine runners were separated by just 0.16 seconds.

The depth of the field was particularly striking when compared with the Paris 2024 Olympic final. That race had an average time of 9.84 seconds, compared with 9.93 seconds in Poland, yet only eight of the Olympic finalists broke the 10-second mark.

Advances in track construction, footwear and training methods have undoubtedly contributed to the acceleration of sprinting. But the significance of a sub-10-second performance has remained largely unchanged for decades. In Italy, for example, Filippo Tortu’s 9.99 seconds in June 2018 was celebrated as a landmark moment after he broke Pietro Mennea’s long-standing national record of 10.01.

The statistics suggest that 2026 could represent a turning point. Despite the absence of a World Championships or Olympic Games this year, 49 athletes had already broken the 10-second barrier 133 times by late August, with several weeks of the competitive season still remaining.

That is a record. The figure was 38 athletes in 2025, 35 in 2024 and just 24 during the 2021 Olympic season. Even in 2009, the year Usain Bolt produced his world record of 9.58 seconds in Berlin, only 11 sub-10-second performances were recorded.

One possible explanation is the wider availability of increasingly advanced sprint shoes. Major sportswear manufacturers have recently expanded access to highly technological models beyond the very top tier of athletes, allowing a broader group of elite sprinters to benefit from the latest developments in footwear.

Yet Bolt’s 9.58-second world record remains the ultimate benchmark. Nearly 17 years after his historic run in Berlin, the mark still appears remarkably distant. The active sprinters closest to Bolt are fellow Jamaicans Kishane Thompson, with a best of 9.75 seconds, and Seville, who has run 9.77.

A study from the University of Massachusetts suggests that Bolt’s performance could theoretically have been even faster with access to the advanced sprint spikes available today. Researchers estimate that his 9.58 could translate to approximately 9.42 seconds under those conditions.

Looking further ahead, researchers have attempted to establish how fast a human being could theoretically run. If, within the next 10 to 15 years, an athlete with exceptional physical abilities were to combine improved track surfaces with more efficient but legal footwear, the theoretical limit could be around 9.29 seconds.

Only a tiny number of athletes would be capable of approaching such a mark. While the number of sprinters capable of breaking 10 seconds continues to rise, the statistics show how rare elite sprinting talent remains. Of the 16 athletes who have run below 9.80 seconds in history, only six are still competing.

The sub-10-second barrier may be becoming increasingly common, but the final frontier of sprinting remains far beyond it. According to the researchers, breaking 9.29 seconds would require an athlete with extraordinary physical characteristics that would push the limits of human performance.
