A new biography of the seven-time Super Bowl champion examines how his relentless pursuit of sporting success contributed to the breakdown of his marriage to supermodel Gisele Bündchen.
Tom Brady spent more than two decades establishing himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. He won seven Super Bowl titles, set numerous records and built a career defined by extraordinary discipline and an almost unmatched ability to perform under pressure. But according to a new biography by former Sports Illustrated journalist Lars Anderson, his determination to keep winning came at a significant personal cost.
Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness traces the quarterback’s journey from an overlooked high-school player to an international sports icon, with particular attention to his relationship with Bündchen and the eventual collapse of their marriage. The book argues that the same competitive instincts that made Brady successful on the field also created tensions in his personal life.
The biography begins with the couple’s first date in 2006, before following their marriage, family life and eventual separation in 2022. Although Anderson did not have direct access to either Brady or Bündchen, he draws on interviews, public statements and accounts from people close to the couple to explore the pressures surrounding their relationship.
From overlooked prospect to NFL legend
Born in San Francisco in 1977, Brady grew up in a family with a strong sporting background. His three older sisters excelled in their respective sports, while he initially struggled to attract attention as an athlete.
His father, Tom Brady Sr., played a significant role in developing his son’s football career, hiring a college coach to train him and arranging for video footage of his performances to be sent to university recruiters.
Brady eventually secured a place at the University of Michigan, where he began as a seventh-string quarterback. He gradually worked his way up the depth chart, becoming known for his preparation and persistence.
His breakthrough came during a nationally televised game against Notre Dame, when coach Lloyd Carr replaced the starting quarterback with Brady at half-time. Despite an initially hostile reaction from the crowd, Brady led Michigan to a comeback victory.
His relatively modest physical attributes, however, meant that he was not considered a leading NFL prospect. At the 2000 draft, the New England Patriots selected him with the 199th overall pick in the sixth round.
That decision would ultimately transform the franchise. Under head coach Bill Belichick, Brady became the central figure in a dynasty that won six Super Bowls together, before he secured a seventh title with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Anderson suggests that Brady’s experience of being overlooked helped shape his relationship with Belichick and his teammates. The quarterback felt he had to continually prove himself, creating a culture of relentless preparation and competition.
The marriage that struggled to compete with football
Brady met Bündchen in 2006, shortly after ending his relationship with actress Bridget Moynahan. Their relationship developed rapidly, and the couple married in 2009, eventually having two children together.
Bündchen was already one of the world’s most successful models, with an international career that included hundreds of magazine covers and major fashion campaigns. Her financial independence and professional achievements meant that she was not reliant on Brady’s sporting success.
According to Anderson, she initially embraced her husband’s competitive ambitions, supporting him through his successes and the controversies that surrounded his career, including the Deflategate scandal.
However, the couple’s priorities increasingly diverged as Brady continued to pursue more championships, even after reaching milestones that would have prompted many athletes to retire.
The tension became particularly evident after the Patriots’ 2017 Super Bowl victory. Bündchen had reportedly hoped that Brady would retire after winning his fifth championship, allowing the family to focus on life beyond football.
Instead, he continued playing for several more seasons. He briefly announced his retirement in February 2022, only to reverse the decision 40 days later and return for another season with Tampa Bay.
By October that year, the couple had finalised their divorce.
The biography presents Brady’s inability to step away from the sport as a central factor in the breakdown of the marriage, suggesting that his desire to keep competing repeatedly took precedence over his family life.
A career built on sacrifice
Brady’s approach to football extended far beyond training sessions and match days. He followed a strict diet and exercise programme, known as the TB12 Method, developed with his longtime body coach Alex Guerrero.
His commitment to physical preparation was matched by an equally intense approach to competition. In the documentary Tom vs. Time, Brady described the sacrifices required to compete against him, saying that opponents needed to be willing to give up their lives because he was prepared to do the same.
Anderson uses this attitude to illustrate the demands Brady placed on himself and the people around him. His success was built on a willingness to prioritise football above almost everything else, but that same mentality became increasingly difficult to reconcile with family responsibilities.
Bündchen had repeatedly expressed concern about the physical toll of the sport. In a 2017 interview, she said Brady had experienced concussions, although his official injury reports did not document the head injuries she described. Her comments prompted an inquiry by the NFL.
The biography also explores how Brady’s personal life became intertwined with his public image, from his close friendship with former US President Donald Trump to his endorsement of cryptocurrency firm FTX. Brady and Bündchen both promoted the company, which later collapsed, leaving investors facing substantial losses.
The price of always wanting more
Brady’s career continued to attract public attention after his divorce, although his transition into retirement has not been without criticism. His work as a television analyst has received mixed reactions, while his appearances in commercials and entertainment events have become a frequent subject of online jokes.
The breakdown of his marriage has also become a recurring theme in public commentary about the former quarterback, with comedians and fans often framing his continued pursuit of sporting success as a sacrifice of his family life.
Anderson’s biography takes a similarly personal approach, using the marriage as a lens through which to examine Brady’s ambitions. But the book has also drawn attention to broader aspects of his career that receive less attention, including his political connections, the risks of professional football and the financial consequences of celebrity endorsements.
Brady retired from professional football in 2023, aged 45, having played longer than any other starting quarterback in NFL history. His final seasons with Tampa Bay demonstrated that he could win a championship without Belichick, but he continued to seek further success.
For Bündchen, the pursuit of another title appears to have become an increasingly difficult part of their shared life. In Tom vs. Time, she described football as her husband’s first love and suggested that it occupied a place in his life that few other things could match.
The biography’s central question is therefore not simply how Brady became one of the greatest players in football history, but what his extraordinary ambition cost him away from the game. His sporting achievements are unlikely to be forgotten, but the end of his marriage has become an equally prominent part of his public story.
