Jeremy Allen White reveals his trick for staying off social media

Jeremy Allen White has found an unusual way to limit his time on TikTok, Instagram and other social media platforms: he deletes the apps after using them.

The “The Bear” star, 35, told dpa in New York that repeatedly deleting and reinstalling social media apps has become his way of preventing himself from endless scrolling.

“I always delete the app after I’ve used it,” White said. If he wants to use it again, he has to go through the entire process of reinstalling it, which he says creates enough friction to stop him from constantly checking social media at home.

‘I mostly use social media as a tool’

White said he generally tries to keep his use of social platforms focused on work.

“For the most part, I use social media as a tool, for example for work,” he said.

His concerns, however, extend beyond his own habits. White said major technology companies have already transformed everyday life and now compete for an enormous share of people’s time and attention.

His particular concern is the impact on younger generations.

“My concern for myself, the world, especially young people and children, is: Do they really want everything? Do they just want all of our attention and time?” White said.

White plays journalist in ‘The Social Reckoning’

White’s concerns about social media also connect directly to his latest role. He plays journalist Jeff Horwitz in Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning,” a film examining the power of social networks and the so-called Facebook Files.

The movie draws on the story of whistleblower Frances Haugen, portrayed by Oscar winner Mikey Madison, whose revelations about Facebook brought renewed scrutiny to the company’s practices.

Madison, unlike White, has chosen an even more definitive approach to social media. She told dpa that she has never had a social media account as an adult and has no plans to create one.
