The United Kingdom could have one of Europe’s most powerful energy systems over the next decade by expanding nuclear power, North Sea oil and gas production, and wind and solar investments at the same time, according to an analysis. The country could emerge as a net electricity exporter while gaining a significant advantage in terms of energy security.
The UK is projected to become one of Europe’s strongest energy powers over the next five to 10 years. An analysis published in the British press said the simultaneous expansion of nuclear power, North Sea oil and gas production, and renewable energy investments could give the country a major competitive advantage.
According to the analysis, the UK will not only be able to meet its own electricity and fuel needs in the early 2030s but could also join the ranks of countries exporting energy to European markets.
Projections by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) indicate that the UK is expected to become a net annual electricity exporter by 2030. By 2035, the country could play a key role in supplying electricity to Northwestern Europe.
The analysis emphasizes that the energy transition is not based on a single technology. Instead, nuclear power, oil and gas production, offshore and onshore wind farms, solar energy, energy storage systems, smart grids and AI-powered digital solutions are all being developed simultaneously.
North Sea oil and gas remain part of the equation
New oil and gas fields in the North Sea are also expected to play an important role in the transition. The development of fields such as Jackdaw and Rosebank, combined with more efficient use of existing fields through new drilling technologies, could reduce the UK’s dependence on imports, according to the analysis.
Advanced seismic imaging and next-generation drilling techniques are making it possible to bring previously uneconomic reserves into production. The North Sea Transition Authority said 141 new applications of drilling technologies were introduced last year alone.
Offshore wind offers another major advantage
On the renewable energy side, the UK is expected to benefit particularly from the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm in the North Sea. Considered one of the world’s most productive offshore wind regions, Dogger Bank is expected to play a critical role in the country’s electricity generation.
Government targets include tripling offshore wind capacity and doubling onshore wind capacity by 2030. Solar power capacity is also planned to increase fourfold over the next decade. Total installed renewable energy capacity could reach around 200 gigawatts by 2035.
Battery storage investment gathers pace
Investment in battery storage is also accelerating to help integrate growing renewable generation into the grid. As the cost of lithium batteries has fallen by more than 90% over the past 15 years, large-scale energy storage facilities are planned across the UK.
Stefano Sommadossi, co-founder of Italian energy company NatPower, said the company would carry out most of its £3.5 billion battery investment in Europe in the UK. The company, which is working with Tesla, aims to establish a major energy storage network by 2030.
UK could become Europe’s second-largest energy supplier
The analysis notes that the UK’s geography means it does not enjoy the same advantages as some other countries when it comes to solar power or shale gas production. Nevertheless, its ability to combine different energy sources could allow it to become one of Europe’s largest energy suppliers after Norway.
The article also argues that Germany and Italy’s decision to move away from nuclear power is increasingly being viewed as a strategic mistake. France, meanwhile, will have to invest hundreds of billions of euros in the coming years to modernize its aging nuclear power fleet.
According to the analysis, the UK’s success in the energy sector will depend on its ability to develop nuclear power, fossil fuels, renewable energy, energy storage systems and digital grid technologies together rather than relying on a single technology.
For that to happen, however, energy policies will need to be implemented consistently over the long term and kept largely insulated from short-term political disputes, the analysis concludes.
