‘Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest’ set for 2029 theatrical release

The Targaryens are heading back to the big screen, with “Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest” scheduled to hit theaters on June 1, 2029, according to Deadline.

The upcoming film will be written by Beau Willimon, known for his work as showrunner of “House of Cards”, and is reportedly set to be directed by Owen Harris. Harris previously directed three episodes of the “Game of Thrones” spin-off “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”.

Details of the plot and cast have yet to be announced.

Aegon the Conqueror

The title suggests the film will focus on Aegon I Targaryen, better known as Aegon the Conqueror, who invaded Westeros alongside his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys.

Using their dragons Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes, the Targaryens conquered most of the Seven Kingdoms. Aegon subsequently became the first king to rule Westeros from the Iron Throne and established the Targaryen dynasty.

The conquest took place roughly 300 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and is chronicled in George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood”.

The many Aegons of Westeros

If confirmed, the film would mark the first on-screen appearance of Aegon the Conqueror himself. However, several other characters named Aegon Targaryen have already appeared across the “Game of Thrones” franchise.

In “House of the Dragon”, the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons begins with the coronation of Aegon II, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, despite his half-sister Rhaenyra Targaryen, portrayed by Emma D’Arcy, being the designated heir.

Rhaenyra also names one of her sons Aegon.

Meanwhile, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” features the young Aegon Targaryen, known as Egg and played by Dexter Sol Ansell. The character is eventually revealed to be a prince of House Targaryen.

Even the original series’ Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, has a connection to the name. Initially believed to be the illegitimate son of Ned Stark, he is ultimately revealed to be a Targaryen and was born Aegon Targaryen.
