The veteran journalist will step down in 2027, bringing an end to more than four decades of reporting from conflict zones and interviewing world leaders.
Christiane Amanpour, one of CNN’s most recognisable international correspondents, is leaving the US news network after 43 years. The 68-year-old journalist announced her decision following months of reflection, describing her time at CNN as a partnership spanning more than four decades.
Her international programme, Amanpour, will be reduced to a weekly broadcast on CNN International at the beginning of 2027 before ending in May. Amanpour is expected to leave the network the following month.
Her programme Amanpour and Company, broadcast by US public television network PBS, will also come to an end at the end of this year.
Amanpour plans new projects
Amanpour intends to continue The Ex Files, a podcast she produces with her former husband, Jamie Rubin. She also said she was looking forward to exploring new projects.
In her farewell statement, the journalist expressed her continued support for CNN and its tradition of independent reporting. She also offered a message to the network and its audience: “Always be truthful, not neutral.”
Her departure comes at a period of significant change for CNN. The network is part of a media landscape being reshaped by the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Paramount, which is controlled by Skydance. The deal, valued at approximately $81 billion, was completed on 6 October. As a result, CNN and CBS, two major US news brands, now belong to the same corporate group.
Journalist spoke publicly about cancer diagnosis
Beyond her reporting career, Amanpour has also spoken openly about her health. In 2021, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The disease later returned, prompting her to describe it as an “invisible killer” and encourage others to undergo available medical screenings.
Over her long career, Amanpour has reported from numerous conflict zones and international crises, building a reputation for covering some of the world’s most consequential events. She has also interviewed prominent political leaders from across the globe, establishing herself as one of the most influential figures in international television journalism.
