Brad Pitt returns as the enigmatic stuntman in David Fincher’s follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
Hollywood has found an unusual way to connect several of its upcoming projects. While Artificial, Luca Guadagnino’s film about OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, brings back Andrew Garfield, who starred in The Social Network, Aaron Sorkin is preparing The Social Reckoning, a follow-up to the 2010 film that he wrote and will direct.
Meanwhile, The Social Network director David Fincher has taken on a very different sequel: The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, a continuation of Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
Fincher directs from a script written by Tarantino, who chose not to direct the sequel himself. The first trailer has now been released, offering a glimpse of a darker and more mysterious Hollywood story centred on Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth.
Cliff Booth returns
Set eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, the film finds Cliff without his former employer and friend, Rick Dalton, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the original.
“Rick got too fat for me to double for him anymore,” Cliff explains in the trailer.
Now working in late-1970s Hollywood as a fixer, Cliff is brought into a new problem when an agent, played by Elizabeth Debicki, asks him to help her client Charlie Peters, a television star portrayed by Scott Caan.
Charlie’s inner circle includes his wife, played by Carla Gugino, and a former football player portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. As the situation becomes increasingly complicated, Cliff finds himself once again responsible for keeping things under control.
“Whatever it is you’re thinking, it ain’t what you think,” Cliff tells someone over the phone.
The trailer suggests a story that moves away from the nostalgic Hollywood fantasy of Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and toward a darker, potentially dangerous side of the industry.
From Tarantino to Fincher
The project marks an unusual handover between two major filmmakers. Tarantino created Cliff Booth and directed the character’s first appearance, while Fincher now takes over the story eight years after the original film.
Brad Pitt reprises the role that earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth will premiere in IMAX on November 25 before arriving on Netflix on December 23.
